Pacific Crest Trail

Mother, daughter and the Pacific Crest Trail Image
This year with the low amounts of snowfall should be good for hikers who want to complete the entire route!
Heather Burror, a Big Pine second grade teacher, and her 8-year-old daughter, Sierra, have started a major trek. They are hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Heather said she and her husband were committed o the outdoors and when Sierra came along, they took her with them. When Sierra was about 5 years old, Heather said, she decided she wanted to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. You can track the mother-daughter team at sierrapct.blogspot.com.

“Pacific Crest Trail Academy”
Eight-year-old Sierra is staying caught up with her classmates while hiking the PCT! :thumb2:
But as much as we are learning on the trail, it cannot replace the reading, writing, and arithmetic Sierra would be studying if she were enrolled in school. So we developed a plan for Sierra to continue to study and to learn on the trail. We call it the Pacific Crest Trail Academy.

The Pacific Crest Trail
2,650 mile Adventure in 134 days

Lots of interesting info at this site. The amount of planning and preparation necessary for this journey is monumental!
The Pacific Crest Trail is the sister to the Appalachain Trail and the second of the Triple Crown (Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail). Both the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail were recognized as National Scenic Trails in 1968. The Pacific Crest Trail was officially completed in 1993. The distance between Mexico and Canada only being 1,000 miles seems short in comparison to the Pacific Crest Trail stretching two and a half times that.

Heather and Sierra's PCT Thru Hike Journal
Keep up with the progress of this mom and daughter team as they conquer the Pacific Crest Trail!!! :yippy2:
Then, rounding a bend in the trail, we spotted the sign we had all been waiting for: Welcome to Oregon! After 1698.8 miles (plus a few extra, given the trail reroute), California is finally behind us!

Someone (maybe me) made a mistake in the report. California is only about 800 miles from north to south. I'm sure the trail makes things a little longer but not about 1700 mi.

The trail must meander quite a bit, which isn't surprising considering the terrain, but here are some facts about the PCT:
Length: Most sites will tell you the PCT is 2,650 Miles, which is the specified length of the trail but not the actual length. The true length Mexico to Canada is 2,655.4 Miles and the trail travels beyond the Canadian border to Manning Park road making the total trail length 2,663.5 Miles.

Elevation Gain: 314,711 feet yes over the course of the PCT you climb 314,711 vertical feet! That’s a lot of up hill climbing.

Lowest Point: Cascade Locks, Oregon (140 feet)

Highest Point: Forester Pass, California (13,153 feet)

California Length: 1,698.8 Miles

Oregon Length: 456.8 Miles

Washington Length: 499.8 Miles

California Elevation Gain:192,339 feet

Mother and daughter complete Pacific Crest Trail :yippy2:
What an incredible experience for both mother and daughter!
“With mixed feelings — both excited and sad that this incredible journey is coming to an end — we began our descent to the border.” The first person they saw was Jeff Burror – husband and father. Together the family continued to the border and Monument 78, the Pacific Crest Trail monument that marks the border between the United States and Canada. From there, the three continued the trail to Manning Park, British Columbia, Canada.
