Death of U2 Joshua Tree

In case you haven't heard, the Joshua tree featured on that old U2 album is dead and gone! BUT there's still a little memorial placed next to where it once stood. Fans still visit the site where the tree once lived and you might be surprised to learn that this once mighty Joshua tree was found a long ways from Joshua Tree National Park. In fact, it's a lot closer to Trona than you might have expected. The famous Joshua tree was actually located between Keeler and Death Valley not far from Darwin. More precisely it's located in Lee Flat and there's even a log book you can sign if you find it!

The published coordinates are N36 19.851 W117 44.715

Just plug them into google maps and you see the spot. Whether or not this is the actual spot I do not know for sure, but it is in the general vicinity one way or the other.

Also check out this link for video of the 1986 photo shoot with U2: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=b0a_1216501624

These coordinates might be more accurate: +36 degrees 19' 51.17", -117 degrees 44' 42.97"
(The picture that shows up on Google maps seems to confirm that these coordinates are accurate. But the other coordinates work too so they must be so close that there's hardly a difference.)

This article seems to be more reliable: http://michael1111.blogspot.com/2008/05/u2-joshua-tree.html

Here's a video posted by a guy who visited the site:

I recall hearing of the demise of the U2 tree back around 2000 or so. I wonder if all the attention from U2 fans is what killed the tree. I guess actually it's more like a large plant than a tree, but they call them trees just the same for some reason. Any reason for the resurgence in interest in this plant/tree?

That pussy Bono is complaining about people downloading his worthless music. He's saying that there should be stricter controls on internet downloads. As if the guy isn't already rich enough. He's probably the most over-rated singer in the history of music! What a greedy b-tard!

LOL :funny: That pretty much sums up the way I feel too! But don't forget to mention that scumbag drummer for Metallica. Also see Episode Nine of the seventh season of South Park: "Christian Hard Rock" (October 29, 2003) for more on the topic of downloading music illegally on the internet. Go to http://www.southparkstudios.com/ to watch it for free.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Rock_Hard for background info. :pacman:

I still like the music of U2, but you have a point that Bono does come off as being incredibly selfish when he complains like this. He could at least make the claim that a large portion of his profits are donated to certain charities and that these charities are short-changed as a result of people failing to properly purchase songs. That might at least persuade a few people to feel guilty, but to just complain about profits just isn't going to win much sympathy! It just makes him sound spoiled, petty, and arrogant.

@U2 at the Joshua Tree
This is a particularly good video covering the dead Joshua tree. Knowing what the outline of the mountains in the background looks like helps in the locating of the Joshua tree. :twirl:

Here's more on the location of the famous (but dead) Joshua Tree for you nuts that want to make this pointless pilgrimage!!!! The link below provides a 360 degree view of the location in the road where you stop to walk to the Joshua tree. Just rotate the control thing in the upper left corner of the viewing area. (If you twirl it fast enough you can almost make yourself dizzy!!! :crazy: )

For those of you who don't want to mess around with the GPS BS, I heard it's right around the 33rd mile marker on the south side of the highway. Can anyone confirm this?

That's correct! I visited the U2 Joshua Tree this last week and it's about three-tenths of a mile south of the 33rd mile marker. There's a good pull out for parking about 150 yards before the 33rd mile marker, BTW. Also, FYI, the markers on the south side of the highway are marked in miles like this: 33.0, 34.0, etc. The markers on the north side of the highway are marked in half miles like this: 33.5, 32.5, etc. The numbers get smaller as you travel towards Lone Pine.
