Putin Loves Linux, Orders Government Transition to Open Source
It's nice to see that some world leaders actually have a vision that rises above the corporate mediocrity that grips our country! Government should reflect the will of the people, not the will of corporate leaders. The first step to make this a reality is to severe the financial ties between government and corporations! Whereas we see our country becoming more fascist, we see meaningful democracy on the rise in Russia.
If Google translate is to be trusted, a Russian publication has claimed that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has signed an order to transition the technological “power structures and the federal budget to free software” starting in the second quarter of 2012.

The 17-page document, “Transition Plan of the Federal Authorities and Federal Budgetary Institutions to Free Software,” covers the period from 2011 to 2015.

It's nice to see a major power moving beyond Micro$oft dependence. It's healthy to move towards open source and it's good to see that Putin has the vision of a future not controlled by major corporations! It would be nice to see our country emulate this and come up with policies that support open source software!

It's nice to see that there are some world leaders who aren't entirely stupid. As a person who uses both Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7 and can personally attest to the efficiency of Linux and the pathetically poor quality of Windows. As a quick example, the Linux update system is efficient and painless and I've only experienced a failure once in two years with that system. On the other hand, the Windows update system is slow and painfully inefficient. On top of that it fails routinely. You pay good money to Micro$oft and you get utter crap and Ubuntu is free and it delivers reliable quality. Go figure! I guess that's how things work in a capitalistic society! You DON'T get what you pay for!

Google found guilty of patent infringement for using Linux
Overly broad interpretations of patent claims completely undercut the possibility of innovation. Some stupid little company decides that they thought of something first and then convinces a court to accept their over-generalized version of their claims so that it appears to apply to innovations developed by others. It's a stupid system we have and it'll bog us down to the point that nothing is accomplished if things aren't reformed soon!
Despite the verdict handed down this month and made public on Wednesday, the fight may not be over. Sources told Network World that Google is considering an appeal. A Google spokesperson further told Network World: "Google will continue to defend against attacks like this one on the open source community. The recent explosion in patent litigation is turning the world's information highway into a toll road, forcing companies to spend millions and millions of dollars defending old, questionable patent claims, and wasting resources that would be much better spent investing in new technologies for users and creating jobs."

Except this over-litigation does benefit one group: LAWYERS!
Unnecessary litigation keeps not only lawyers employed, but there are judges, court officials, paralegals, etc. that all benefit from unnecessary litigation. I wouldn't be surprised if 40% of this country's GNP is spent on legal services. Cut away that fat and the economy would be fixed in no time!

Russia’s Sane Thoughts on Copyright and Internet
It seems that the USA is controlled to such a degree by corporate interests that it is impossible for the USA to get anything right. It's all about keeping the rich and powerful, rich and powerful!
:curse:
Copyright and Internet regulation has been a big topic of discussion at the G8 summit in France. While the leaders of most countries backed the interests of a handful of entertainment industry companies, Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev had a different view: “The declaration reflects an absolutely conservative position that intellectual property rights should be protected according to the existing conventions... but... those conventions were written 50 or almost 100 years ago, and they are unable to regulate the whole complex of relations between the copyright owner and users. Unfortunately, this was not included in the declaration because, in my opinion, my colleagues have a more conservative opinion than is necessary at the moment. Or maybe they just don’t use the Internet and have little understanding of it.”

Sometimes I think that Russia and the USA are in the process of trading spots. Russia becomes freer and more innovative as time goes on and the USA does just exactly the opposite. Putin and Medvedev seem to be visionary leaders who are in the process of bringing about real change. Obama promised change, but in reality he seems to be nothing more than just more of the same old crap!

Linux kernel version bumped up to 3.0 as 20th birthday approaches
Happy birthday!!! bouncer
The Linux kernel was first introduced to the world in a mailing list post Torvalds wrote on August 25, 1991. The code was published on an FTP server the following month and released under the GNU General Public License the next year. The Linux Foundation is planning to officially observe the kernel's 20th anniversary at the LinuxCon event next month in Vancouver. I'm going to be there in person (you can see me at the LinuxCon Media Roundtable session) to participate in the festivities and cover some of the keynotes.

Is Microsoft Linux's New BFF?
I don't know if I'd trust Micro$oft just yet if I were Linux!
