Polygraph Efficacy Debunked by Science
Here's an interesting online book about the polygraph. You could buy the book for $50 or you could just read it online. The following summary paragraph diplomatically states that the polygraph is BS! :funny:
We have reviewed the scientific evidence on the polygraph with the goal of assessing its validity for security uses, especially those involving the screening of substantial numbers of government employees. Overall, the evidence is scanty and scientifically weak. Our conclusions are necessarily based on the far from satisfactory body of evidence on polygraph accuracy, as well as basic knowledge about the physiological responses the polygraph measures. We separately present our conclusions about scientific knowledge on the validity of polygraph and other techniques of detecting deception, about policy for employee security screening in the context of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories, and about the future of detection and deterrence of deception, including a recommendation for research.

This link features the video I posted yesterday and a transcript that someone has taken the time to link just about every detail to it's source.

This is probably one of the most thorough and unconfused 9-11 links I have ever come across.

Lie-detecting camera tracks facial blood flow
Here's another product of junk science that will appeal to those who want to detect lies. The gullible idiots who wind up purchasing this system should be shot and anyone who is cheated out of a job or determined to be guilty of something as part of an investigation that utilizes this device in any way should not only be encouraged to sue the idiots who use the device, but should also be allowed to sue the idiots who created the device and suggested that it was actually useful in detecting lies! The biggest lie of all is that it's even possible to detect lies through measurement of involuntary and subtle bodily responses.
:smack:
A camera system under development in Britain can detect when people are lying in roughly two-thirds of cases, and could become a powerful new security tool, researchers say. Hassan Ugail of Bradford University worked with colleagues at Aberystwyth University and the U.K. Border Agency to develop a camera that picks up on changes in blood flow and expression in a subject's face when lying.

Another gimmick created to appeal to the law and order crowd. They constantly thirst for some miracle machine that detects lies ACCURATELY. The fundamental flaw in the logic of the theory behind these devices is that it's impossible to distinguish stress caused by lying from stress due to other causes. The conflation between stress and lying overlooks the obvious, but apparently when someone has a strong emotional need to believe in something it is easy to overlook even the obvious. It's all well and fine for people to tinker with devices and that sort of thing, but it becomes criminal when public funds are wasted on the research and development of such devices. Maybe there should be more studies into why so many people are emotionally attached to the fantasy of lie detection.

Questionable FBI Practices
Law enforcement engages in a lot of questionable practices that are not based on scientific thinking. Here's an excerpt from a very interesting article about such practices.
Does this sound familiar? The same problem exists with the polygraph, a favorite tool of the FBI and other law enforcement agencies. The polygraph measures such things as heartbeat, blood pressure, and respiration. The polygraph is not a lie detector because changes in heartbeat, blood pressure, and respiration can be caused by many things. Nervousness, anger, sadness, embarrassment, and fear can all be causal factors in altering one's heart rate, blood pressure, or respiration rate. Having to go to the bathroom can also be causative. There are also a number of medical conditions such as colds, headaches, constipation, or neurological and muscular problems that can cause the physiological changes measured by the polygraph. The claim that an expert can tell when the changes are due to a lie and when they are due to other factors has never been proven. Why do so many people, in and out of law enforcement, believe the polygraph is a lie detector? For the same reason that many believe that profiling is accurate, that their daily horoscope is right on, that their tarot card reader is clairvoyant, that John Edward gets messages from the dead, that graphology can reveal the true character of a person, and that Rush Limbaugh is a national treasure: the belief is rooted in cold reading and subjective validation, and grows in soil fertilized with a lot of confirmation bias and communal reinforcement.
