Killer December followed by more snow in January
Good news for skiers and good news for the environment. :sunshine:
More snow news from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The mountain measurements show Mammoth Pass snowpack still even with the wettest years on record - that's 1982/83.

The statistics remain staggering with both snow and precipitation measurements double, triple even quadruple normal for this time of year.

Fog Continues to Shroud Some Areas of the Desert
The cold fog we had yesterday and so far today probably is a lot like what they have in London on a fairly routine basis. It's fun for a day or two, but after that it gets old really fast! :dizzy:
In the aftermath of the snow on Jan. 3, a thick blanket of fog settled over the desert. The thick mist moved into the Indian Wells and Searles Valleys on Tuesday and Wednesday. While Ridgecrest saw gradual sunshine appear on Wednesday, Trona remained covered in fog. Residents, and employees driving in to work at Searles Valley Minerals, struggled through the fog Wednesday evening and on into Thursday morning.

Hate to keep posting to my own thread, but here's another website that you might find fun and interesting. You can actually control the direction of the webcams and watch live action shots of what people are doing up at Mammoth. It's kind of fun if you wish you were up in Mammoth, but don't feel like taking the drive!

Snowboarder rescued outside ski area boundary
Cell phones have become a real game-changer in cases like this! :pacman:
A combined effort among members of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Mono Search and Rescue and Bishop CHP led to the rescue of a lost snowboarder. According to the Mono County Sheriff's Department, David Joseph, 27 of Crystal Heights, California, went snowboarding by himself and unknowingly crossed the western edge of the ski area boundary and became lost. Officers said that Joseph was able to contact his father by cell phone. The man's father notified Ski Patrol

Mammoth Fire Department on dangers of heavy snow
This isn't a real concern here in Trona, but then again this is from a paper covering an area that includes Mammoth - our neighbors to the north! :twirl:
Excess snow loads on roofs sometimes cause exterior or interior doors not to open or close easily. Snow load can cause cracks or bulging in walls, bowing in timbers of ceilings and walls. Sometimes there are no signs at all before the collapse of a roof. The fire department recommends that you hire a professional to remove the snow.

If snow blocks vents, this can cause a build up of deadly carbon monoxide inside. Also, the top of your propane tank and regulator need to be routinely dug out for access. All exterior gas pipes should be exposed. Snow an pipe sections can cause them to crack and leak.

The Mammoth Sky report says 606 inches snow this season already. There's surely more to come.

Openings delayed for Lakes Basin, Reds Meadow roads
Should be a great year for visiting the High Sierras! :sunshine:
Due to heavy winter snowfall, roads accessing the Mammoth Lakes Basin are projected to open later than normal this year. The US Forest Service and Town of Mammoth Lakes will be working cooperatively to provide vehicle access to the Lakes Basin and open recreation facilities as quickly as possible, with a targeted opening date of May 25th, prior to the Memorial Day weekend. Further assessments on snow conditions and facility repair needs will be made beginning May 10th and a more detailed opening schedule will be developed.

ALSO:
The Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center in Lee Vining is now open for the season. The Center is open Thursday through Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Days of operation will increase to seven days a week beginning Thursday, May 19th.
