The internet makes us aware of coincidental events that occur around the world. Whereas these coincidences have always happened at about the same frequency, our awareness of these coincidences has increased greatly! It is common for people to see causation and meaningful correlation where there is only coincidence.

Yep, a lot of things get hyped way out of proportion as the result of the news media and our global communications network. People need to just take a chill pill and realize that coincidences happen all the time and that there isn't a secret room somewhere in which evil men plot all these horrible things in order to scare us. I believe in evil mean, but usually they don't consciously plan elaborate schemes for their own benefit. It's more of a problem with the system and how individuals haphazardly use and abuse the system for their own benefit.

Technology Moral Panics: But Think Of The Children!
It's a stupid story, but it's a story that gets repeated over and over and over. You'd think that after awhile people would get smarter, but that just never seems to happen!
And while Time Magazine came out of it looking bad, it didn't stop politicians from using the "moral panic" created by the article to push through the Communications Decency Act -- which after many years of wasted taxpayer money was eventually declared unconstitutional. What's scary though, is how this process works: newspaper basically overhypes a non-story into a "big scary trend" and almost immediately politicians start pushing for questionable "save the children!" legislation...

Internet Stalkers :eek2: :dizzy: :funny:
Here's one for the half-wits who were worried about the Barbie doll equipped with a camera! This is from a BBC production called Brass Eye. It's pretty funny stuff, but it's also cutting criticism of the idiots who believe all the BS about how dangerous the internet is for kids. Give it a break after a while! Are these people really this stupid?

Child Protection Agencies Attempting To Avoid Cuts
Desperate times call for desperate measures apparently. It looks like child protection agencies are worried about funds drying up and so they're attempting to win public support for continued funding at a time when they should face the same cutbacks that other agencies are facing. The problem is that any funding they win is funding that won't go to more important services. Of course, child protection agencies are convinced that their needs are more important than the needs of anyone else. Even if people are forced to go without medical care and wind up dying that is nothing to them compared with their mission to go around falsely accusing people of committing serious crimes. And so the Associated Press spreads the misinformation, exaggerating and sensationalizing a problem that exists, but no where to the extent claimed here. Notice that an official from the National Center For Missing and Exploited Children even makes a statement in order to keep funding for these programs. This is a racket of the worst kind, but very few people are brave enough to call them on their shenanigans since child protection advocates almost always resort to name-calling any time anyone disagrees with anything they claim.

It's also a jobs program to ensure the employment of incompetent psychologists and mental health workers!

A lot of government jobs exist only to provide employment for otherwise useless individuals.

Sex, Drugs... And Facebook? Moral Panic Police Blaming Social Networks For Kids Being Kids
I don't know what it is about some people, but there is a certain type of person who just doesn't take the time to think things through very carefully. They jump to stupid conclusions and then act on them. The problem is that too many of these people have an influence on social and legal policy in this country and so they mess things up for the rest of us. There should be a basic requirement that people should know how to think in order to be certified as adults. I'm not saying that they should be required to adhere to some dogmatic set of beliefs. All I'm saying is that they should be competent thinkers who are able to understand the difference between correlation and cause and effect! Is that asking too much?
:smack:
It seems we have a classic conflation of correlation and causation. You could just as easily suggest that taking drugs, smoking and drinking lead teens to spend more time on Facebook. Or, more likely, it's a third factor. The general type of teen who is more likely to be active on a social network is also more likely to be active in the sort of social activities that teens are involved in -- which (despite some adults' denial) still includes drinking, smoking and taking drugs (sex too, I imagine). But pinning the blame on social networking is silly. I would bet that the same kids probably use text messaging more often. Would CASA also say that text messaging "puts kids at increased risk." Correlation is not causation and since the "National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse" is based at Columbia University, you'd think that someone there was familiar with this basic concept.
