Any and all voting machine software should be open source to prevent any fraud. Public inspection of source code will ensure that there are no shenanigans going on behind the scenes. The companies involved might claim that allowing the public to inspect the code would enable hackers to cheat, but that simply is not the case. Well-written code guards against such abuse. Also, on a more philosophical note, open source is the only kind of code that should be used by a democracy.
