The same thing is happening to a friend of mine. He's tried signing up three times in the last two weeks and so far none of his accounts have been activated. What do you have to do to get accepted here? Submit a credit report or what? I read the post about all the spam accounts. Maybe his usernames looked to spammish or something. I try to get him to use a more normal username or something!
:dizzy:

It ONLY took me four tries before one of my usernames got accepted! :mad002:
(Now I've gotta figure out how to get my user picture thing loaded! It's a flying pig in case anyone wants to know!)

Thanks for your persistence. There have been days where I've been spammed with over 100 fake account requests. Most of the names are obvious spam, but some are borderline and difficult to tell if they are spam or not. I can look at other information to make a determination, but that is extremely time-consuming.

Is there some way to filter out the spam? I have a couple friends who have tried to set up accounts who were apparently rejected.

Here's a solution to the spam and rejected accounts problem. I noticed an email address near the bottom of the DV Plants page. Perhaps sending an email to that address in which you identify your intended username will alert the site administrator that you are a real person interested in joining the forum. I suppose spam accounts could do that too, but it would be extra work for them and so they'd probably not do that since presumably they are also busy spamming other sites. It's not like tronanews.com is the number one target on their list!

Just to help people know what I'm up against, here's a sample of some of the junk names requesting to join the board that I rejected today:
HallirrilazeR, inhawlene, acaniedgich, 4ineseedge, RowABW, NUMenetewep, carpinteyrofkp, Oriplyenlible, alterneAlanna, wpfixamdpxyf, gogolestgbg, JoshuaABH, qyezohsqkj, Floatiela, Petef, karmapasse, SreatiTrance, Coettetrourgy, bedemibq, TetExileEterb, empomegeweete, konstantinrootorpp, NuajvzdfnE, TomaItasmadia, meroiproftofs bewzhus, ccfgqghipm, asdfgt24n, kuperhapszb, Peyton_North_Dakota, Usammorekeerb, soossetom, Dove comprare viagra, Viaccatly, nurneOvetle, AffoffAgets, Fluininus, Pefkeetaded, clivacene, JeothImmofe, Marthaa, DofPrurebluro, AdsSeo, Pigenaxia, Pislililypega64d, hendseedienny, PrilirebluecT, snadnercorine, cypearroppy, WiltonPugh Scattyanalm, Jeoms, XroybxahkM, Alitiassy, PraimiJaw, geaguesobarma, TerrellMacey71, duereRaimebem, Authemekneeni, assundanork, FaisadayItest, Appoiniusapow, unupeAffemi, kallcholago, korpwehume, woodhzdr, eseoonekh, resfuetty, intollilk, LigeEtess, perfectttn, feartorielild, Leampfainia, aoookkoy, Juxerat

That's just a small portion of what I had to wade through today. In the last couple weeks I've had to reject about 800 requests to join the board. Spotting legitimate people amongst all the junk requests is pretty tough. The last account I activated was one for a user called James, but I'm pretty sure that was a junk request although the email address and name seemed reasonable.

Those are some pretty random looking usernames. What is the point of spamming a message board anyways? Seems like a complete waste of time to me!

Since the last post I've deleted over 1200 spam account requests!

1200 spam account requests? This board gets hit by more spam than it gets legitimate views! I'm not saying that this board is unpopular, but if those spam requests could be turned into actual legitimate participation in the form of views or posts, this board would be a pretty good online hangout. Let's face it, it's a little slow around these parts, but it's the quality that counts! Right?

A friend has been trying to start an account here and so far hasn't been successful. I remind her to pick a name that is easily recognized as a legitimate name, but I'm wondering how easy it is to separate the spam from the legitimate stuff when you're dealing with the kind of volume you describe! I send you (the admin) a PM when I find out what her username is!

Every week or two I clear out all the requests for user accounts. I have not come across one I could easily identify as legitimate for a couple months. Typically I'll receive anywhere from 600 to 1000 spam account requests per week. Obviously, if there was a single legitimate request mixed in there, chances are that I'd miss it. BTW, here are a few of the spam account names I received today. Most come from eastern Europe, Russia, or China, with a few from various smaller undeveloped countries around the world.
SvetaVeri, aidelfboabe, Mikeinjepsyelerne, erjulidlmadl, Raul81, Dibrareek, cypeGreep, Exemeteenda

BTW, you might think that the Raul81 account looks like a normal, legitimate name, but that account request came from a server in Sweden.

I know you've missed a few real account requests because a few of my friends say that they've tried to sign up, but that their accounts never get activated. With the number of span account requests you receive I can see how it's easy to miss legitimate requests. Good luck dealing with this problem!
