A friend who lives in Germany pointed out to me that the most popular nut in his country is the hazelnut. He mentioned Nutella (a popular hazelnut spread) and various confections created using hazelnuts as a likely reason for the popularity of the hazelnut. Of course, here in the USA the hazelnut has not really been considered to be one of the most popular nuts. Almonds, peanuts, pistachios, cashews, walnuts, pecans, and coconuts would all most likely be much more popular here in the USA. Even filberts, macadamia nuts, pine nuts, and Brazil nuts would be considered as popular as hazelnuts. On the other hand, Nutella could conceivably change that as it gains popularity here in the USA. Although it's been popular in other countries for quite some time, it's only in the last decade that it's presence has become noticeable here in the USA.
