Oak Leaves And Acorns

An acorn is a nut, which is, of course, a type of fruit, and so, it is correct to state that the fruit or nut of an oak tree is known as an acorn. It is also the case that not all acorns are the same. There are around five hundred species of oak in existence and so there's a lot of room for variation in terms of color, size, and shape. That said, there are two predominant species of oak which grow in the area around Kennedy Meadows and they are the California Black Oak (Quercus kelloggii) and the Canyon Live Oak (Quercus chrysolepis). This video features both species of oak. It should be noted that while the Canyon Live Oak is evergreen, the California Black Oak is distinctly deciduous. Or, put another way, not all oaks adhere to the same life-style!

Lyrics:

Rotting oak leaves on the ground
Lots of acorn nuts nearby
Sometimes quite abundant
Seemingly redundant
Scattered all around on the ground they lie

Will they sprout?
Will they grow?
Will they reach up to the sky?
Sadly some
Maybe most
Possibly even all will die

It's been said that mighty oaks
From an acorn nut do grow
Incredible potential
But the problem existential
Is that lots of hungry critters eat them as you know
