Yerba Mansa

If you travel the dirt road connecting the town of Darwin to Darwin Falls you will go by Miller's Spring. If you pass by during the right part of the year you will be treated to the sight of yerba mansa in bloom. These showy flowers seem out of place in the desert, but they are native to the area. However, the only place I've ever seen them is at Miller's Spring and they are entirely dependent a on steady supply of water. (Click here for more information about yerba mansa.)

Mr. Legs Contest

A YouTube user by the name of PantyMython holds the Mr. Legs Contest every year. Although I didn't participate last year, I decided to give it a shot this year. The contest is more of an excuse to make a ridiculously silly video than anything that people get intensely competitive about. In fact, I'm not even too sure who the winners were this year. But if you go to PantyMython's YouTube page it should be easy to discover the details!

Summer Heat!

It's often the case around these parts for the high temperature every day during the month of July to exceed one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. So far this has been the case this year. In fact, the last five days of June had highs over 100 degrees! That's thirty days in a row so far! We'll see how long it lasts, but it would not be terribly surprising if the 100+ streak lasts all the way through August and part way through September. I'm not sure what the longest 100+ streak for this part of the desert has been, but so far the hottest day this summer was 110 degrees on three different days!
