Columbine is one of those plants you wouldn't expect to see in Death
Valley National Park. It grows at higher elevations and it requires lots of
water. However, Death Valley NP has a few localities that satisfy those
requirements. A colony of columbine plants grows just up from Thompson Camp,
which is located in Surprise Canyon in the Panamint Range. The colony is
near a large water cistern. DeDecker claims that columbine also grows in the
Inyo Range and the Grapevine Range.
The little bats that fly around at dusk in the Northern Mojave are known by
the scientific name Pipistrellus hesperus. They are more commonly
referred to as Western Pipistrelle Bats, and even more commonly as just plain
bats. They are tiny, even smaller than mice, but when flying around at
twilight they seem slightly larger due to the size of their wings. The
little guy in the video wound up on my front porch probably as a result of
flying into my screen door!
Summer Heat
The over 100 degrees streak lasted only until August sixth, which resulted
in a steak of 42 days with highs over 100 degrees. From August
seventh until August twelvth the high never topped the century mark.
However, every day since then has been over 100 degrees! In fact, two days
in August have officially been recorded to have hit 108 degrees on the good, ole
Fahrenheit scale!
