It was approximately two years ago that TheChurchOfDave posted a song/video that was critical of the way YouTube selected videos to appear on its Featured Videos page. While YouTube still features videos, it's not as big of a deal as it was two years ago. Back then being featured made a huge difference in the views a video received and the number of people who subscribed to a channel. TheChurchOfDave strongly suggested that the selection process used to determine which videos were featured was less than fair. In fact, he emphatically implied that there was favoritism and drove his point home using a sexual metaphor. The name of the video is explicit and so I won't mention it here, but you can click here to watch the video or click here to check out his channel if you are curious!

A couple days after watching TheChurchOfDave's video, I wrote a short response song on the same topic. I refrained from making direct accusations in my song, but I did ask the musical question: "What do you have to do to make the Featured page?" I contemplated posting a video for the song, but decided not to since it seemed to me to be a little pretentious to accuse YouTube of being unfair. After all, the implication most people would see in the video was that I considered myself to be deserving of the honor of appearing on the Featured page. So, I decided to not post a video for the song, but instead committed to wait until I reached 1000 subscribers in hopes that my subscribers would understand my sense of humor and recognize the song to be more of a joke than a serious attempt to criticize the video sharing site hosting the video.

Just last week the number of subscribers to my channel topped 1000. In fact, it's over 1600 as I write this blog entry! To celebrate the achievement of my goal to reach 1000 subscribers, I went ahead and posted a video for my "Featured" song. The video accompanying the song includes a number of outtakes from previous videos made during the past three years. The intent is to poke fun at myself and all the silly videos I've made and posted on YouTube. Looking back through all my videos I realize how mild they are compared to the videos posted by top YouTubers and it seems clear to me that the main reason I have not become more popular on YouTube is simply that I consistently fail to push the limits of what is considered acceptable or appropriate. In other words, I'm just plain boring!!! LOL
