Lesson Seventy-four: Decimal Division

Here's a simple decimal division problem for you to consider. 

            .64 
     	 +------                 
       5 | 3.20                1. Divide 5 into 32 
           30		       2. Multiply 5 x 6 = 30
          ----                 3. Subract 32 - 30 = 2
            20                 4. Bring down the 0
            20                 5. Divide 5 into 20
           ----                6. Multiply 5 x 4 = 20
             0                 7. Subtract 20 - 20 = 0
As you can see you deal with the numbers as if the decimal point didn't exist, BUT in your final answer you must make sure that you place the decimal point in the proper position. That position is directly above its location in the divident (in this case 3.20).

Here's another example for you: 


            4.8 
     	 +--------                 
       6 | 28.8                1. Divide 6 into 28 
           24		       2. Multiply 6 x 4 = 24
          ----                 3. Subract 28 - 24 = 4
            48                 4. Bring down the 8
            48                 5. Divide 6 into 48
           ----                6. Multiply 6 x 8 = 48
             0                 7. Subtract 48 - 48 = 0
This time the decimal was in a slightly different location in the dividend. BUT again the decimal point went straight up in the quotient.

       5.2 / 4

       You can convert these to this form:

       4  |  5.2 

       And do them on scatch paper to get the answers.
