Arithmetic - Decimal Operations - Decimal Addition

Adding decimal values is just like adding whole numbers. For the most part you can just pretend that the decimal point isn't even there. Here are a few examples: 


              .55		.83
            + .43             + .12
           -------           -------
              .98               .95


              .41               .62
            + .35             + .37
           -------           -------
              .76               .99
When problems are arranged vertically, all you have to do is make sure that the tenths columns are lined up and that the hundredths columns are lined up. Actually, you just line up the decimal points and the columns fall nicely in place. However, problems can also be arranged horizontally as is the case for these examples: 

        .33 + .22 = .55		.41 + .22 = .63

        .45 + .13 = .58		.09 + .10 = .19
If you want you can re-write each of these problems vertically.

Even when you have digits on both sides of the decimal point, adding is done as usual. 


              3.51		 2.33
            + 4.23             + 3.22
           --------           --------
              7.74               5.55


              3.42               1.52
            + 3.25             + 2.34
           --------           --------
              6.67               3.86
Just line up the decimal points and the columns will line up like they're supposed to. 

        1.33 + 2.22 = 3.55		2.41 + 3.22 = 5.63

        2.45 + 2.13 = 4.58		1.09 + 2.10 = 3.19
